 OVERBERG WINE ROUTE
 BEAUMONT

Steeped in atmosphere and described as one of the most characterful wineries in the Cape, Beaumont in the Walker Bay area ensures a memorable visit. The small, rustic cellar dates back to the 1700s, when it was a trading outpost of the Dutch East India Company and is situated on the historic Compagnes Drift Farm in the village of Bot River at the foot of the Houwhoek Mountains.

 BIRKENHEAD

Birkenhead, the only beer and wine estate in South Africa, produces naturally slow-brewed premium beers made from crystal-clear spring water and will soon bottle their own wines as well. The restaurant on the estate has stunning views over the Klein River mountains that is open for lunches seven days a week.

 ERICA  |  Raka label

Raka vineyards are just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town, nestled near the coast, under the shadow of Africa’s southernmost mountain range. With both north and south facing slopes, a selection of soil types and cooling sea breezes from Walker Bay and Cape Agulhas, the farm is ideally suited to the production of superior wines. Everyone at Raka has taken great care to ensure that their range of wines mirror the farm’s rare natural character.

Red Wines ... Shiraz, Pinotage, Bordeaux blend, Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot, Raka Spliced (Cabernet Sauvignon, Ruby Cabernet, Shiraz and Merlot blend), Raka Red (Cabernet, Merlot, Ruby Cabernet, Shiraz and Petite Verdot blend) and Raka Rose.

 HEMELZICHT

At the top of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is Hemelzicht, owned and managed by Louis and Anette Saaiman. Apart from seven hectares of Sauvignon Blanc, a total of sixteen hectares are being cultivated that include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Malbec.

 IONA

Andrew Gunn, an engineer by training, bought the farm in 1997 and decided to name it after the island Iona off the west coast of Scotland. Iona is South Africa's coolest vineyard on a 420m high mountain plateau in the Kogelberg overlooking the Atlantic Ocean near Kleinmond in the south and the Elgin Valley in the north. Due to its elevation and unique climate, their grapes are harvested from late March to late April, up to eight weeks later than other wine producing areas in South Africa. They produce high quality wines in limited quantities and only grapes harvested from their own farm are used in their wines. They focus on Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot (which includes a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon) and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and Dry Rose under the Dun-I label.

Red Wines ... Iona Merlot, Dun-I Cabernet Sauvignon and Dun-I Dry Rose.
