In preparation for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation (WCPSC) and the Overberg Sport Council (OSC) will be promoting and celebrating the values of Olympism and the Olympic Games.
The Western Cape Province will embark on a full on campaign to spread the message of Olympism to all areas of the province. These campaigns will kick-start in Kleinmond, Overberg on Saturday, 14 May 2016 from 09h00-12h00.
This will form part of a build-up towards the Main Event which will be the Olympic Day, taking place in Cape Winelands later this year.
These awareness campaigns will be known as the Olympic Roadshows of which the Overberg District will have the honor of hosting the first Roadshow that will move across the province. The Overberg District hosted the very first National Olympic Day in 2013 and will be looking to build on the legacy that was built by the Overberg Sport Council.
The Overberg Olympic Roadshow will consist of a programme which will conduct sport and education programmes to boys and girls aged 9-12 years. This will feature topics ranging from Olympic Education, social themes such as how to stand up against bullying and fun filled games and activities for everyone.
The sport codes from the Overberg District Sport Academy System will be exhibiting their sport and teaching all on the basic skills needed within their relative sport code. These sessions will be conducted by the Overberg sport federations affiliated to the Overberg District Academy and the Overberg Sport Council.
The values of the Olympics are Excellence, Friendship and Respect, while values for Olympism are (i) joy of effort; ii) fair play; iii) respect for others; iv) pursuit of excellence and v) balance between body, will and mind.
The Olympic Torch will be lit in Kleinmond, Overberg and will move across the Western Cape Province as a symbol of the Olympic Spirit.
